On the 2nd of October, 1956, Peter Manuel began his jail sentence. By that point, he must have considered himself very clever indeed. Seemingly protected behind bars, he was now out of sight while the investigation focused on William Watt. Once again, he had outsmarted the police force.

Meetings

Peter Manuel spent the next thirteen months of his life confined to the Barlinnie Prison in Glasgow. Just because he was locked up, however, that did not mean he couldn’t resume his favorite pastime of trying to outsmart the police. Taking a notable interest in the killing of the Watt family, he reached out to Laurence Dowdall. Dowdall was a lawyer who would eventually become a legend in the Glasgow legal system. In years to come, those thrown into jail would be heard to demand the authorities “bring me Dowdall!” He had a reputation as a fiercely intelligent and skilled legal practitioner, and it was he who received a letter from Peter Manuel, in which Peter asked that he assist in appealing against his current conviction. As a bargaining chip, he offered up information regarding a recently required client of Dowdall, whom he described as an “all-round athlete.” The client was none other than William Watt, who had competed one time in the Highland Games.
